Promoting rice varieties and diversified cropping systems to manage rice fallows
This activity is designed to test and promote context-appropriate crop diversification options and intensification models. IRRI is evaluating non-paddy crops in the rabi season in consultation with the farmers, district and block-level agriculture officials, scheme officers, and scientists from the Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (ICAR-IIOR, Hyderabad, IIPR Kanpur) and Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). Crops and varieties of pulses (green gram, black gram) and oil seeds (groundnut, sesame, sunflower) are selected to design an optimized cropping system to improve the overall productivity of the tank command and influence areas.
Outcome
Reached 20318 families with 11900 hectares of land in promoting several crop varieties like green gram (Virat, Sikha and Surya), black gram (Indra Urad1), Mustard (Giriraj) and Sesame (Suprava)
