Areas of Focus
 

ClimatePRO is focused on enhancing the climate and livelihood resilience and boosting the incomes of the farmers, especially small,marginal and women farmers, in a sustainable manner. It strives to promote gender-equitable sustainable intensification of rice-based agri-food systems. Sustainability, in this context, encompasses not only environmental aspects but also economic and social dimensions. To attain this, a blend of technical and institutional innovations are being deployed, which include:

  1. Strengthening varietal advancement in the seed chain with accelerated deployment of Early Generation Seed (EGS). To strengthen varietal advancement in the seed chain, the ClimatePRO project is emphasizing on accelerated deployment of Early Generation Seed (EGS). Through strategies like on-farm varietal evaluation, crop cafeteria, and cluster demonstrations, the project aims to enhance the resilience and adaptability of crop varieties to changing climatic conditions.   2. Promoting rice varieties and diversified cropping systems to manage rice fallows. This activity is designed to test and promote context-appropriate crop diversification options and intensification models. IRRI is evaluating non-paddy crops in the rabi season in consultation with the farmers, district and block-level agriculture officials, scheme officers, and scientists from the Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (ICAR-IIOR, Hyderabad, IIPR Kanpur) and Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT).   3. Optimizing nutrient management through an integrated plant nutrient supply (IPNS) system. This activity aims to promote soil conservation and better organic matter management. It encourages the inclusion of legumes in cropping systems and rotations as grain, forage, or green manure crops. Read more

  4. Strengthening entrepreneurship capacity of women farmers of farmer organizations for seed and service provisions ClimatePRO has a strong focus on nurturing entrepreneurship among women farmers. In Balangir and Ganjam, a multi-product, multi-service women Farmer Producer Company (FPC) is being incubated, with over 2000 members. Read more

  5. Developing of farmer/community based local seed systems for rice, pulses, oilseeds through farmer collectives. This activity will focus on supporting collectives like women’s and youth groups and farmer producer organizations to become quality seed producers and provide them necessary technical support.   6. Development and popularization of gender-responsive and context-specific climate-smart agriculture systems and practices through model villages. One model village per district will be established to demonstrate holistic and landscape scale evidence-based climate smart agricultural technologies and practices, while being inclusive and gender-responsive.
